What is condescending?

If you say that someone is condescending, you are showing your disapproval of the fact that they talk or behave in a way which shows that they think they are superior to other people.

If you feel put down or belittled, they are being condescending. They don't get to say “but I didn't mean to be condescending.” If they are doing it either on purpose or otherwise, and you don't pick up on it, lucky you.

Someone who is condescending “talks down” to others because he or she feels superior to them. To patronize someone is to treat them condescendingly, but in a particular way – as though dealing with a child. A stereotypical patronizing remark (by a man to a woman) is “Don't you worry your pretty little head about it”.

Common synonyms for condescending

arrogant.
patronizing.
snooty.
complaisant.
disdainful.
egotistic.
la-dee-da.
lofty.
