Giotto's Phototopia Virgin Mary.
Virgin Mary (detail from the Crucifixion). Around 1290. Tempera on wood panel. Florence, Santa Maria Novella church.
This work, painted on a huge wooden panel, was commissioned from the artist for the opening of the Florentine church of Santa Maria Novella. On either side of the cross stood the Virgin Mary and the Apostle John. The dark, mournful and majestic figure of the Mother of Christ stands out against the neutral golden background. The pose and condition of the figure and hands, as well as the facial expression, speak of deep emotion. The artist beautifully expressed the mother's restrained and heroic suffering. The almost sculptural density with which the image is modeled testifies to Giotto's later, already established pictorial style.
