Phototopia of Masaccio "Saint Peter"
"Saint Peter Giving Alms", Masaccio, Brancacci Chapel, Santa Maria del Carmine, Florence, 15th century.
In this scene Masaccio describes two episodes told in the "Acts of the Apostles" (one of the books of the New Testament). After the crucifixion of Christ, his disciples, led by the apostle Peter, led the early Christian community in Jerusalem. They called on the rich members of the community to donate their property and money to the poor and needy. In Masaccio's painting, we see Saint Peter handing out money to a woman whose poverty is indicated by the poor dress of her child. One man, his name was Ananias, sold part of his land to the community, but secretly kept half of the money he received for it. Saint Peter exposed him as a liar before God - and Ananias immediately fell to the ground dead. Later, Ananias' wife, Sapphira, died for the same reason.
