Portrait of Charles I
A very large painting (276 x 217 cm) occupied a place on the wall in one of the rooms on the first floor of the Rundale Palace Museum. Many will recognize the King of England Charles I, painted by Anthony van Dyck. The portrait in the Louvre is one of the most popular images of this tragic ruler and depicts the king hunting in a proud pose against the backdrop of a romantic seaside landscape. The portrait dates back to around 1635, and it is not known when it came to France. In 1793, it was already included in the collection of the newly founded Louvre, received from the property of King Louis XVI, who, in turn, bought it from the Countess Dubaret; it is noteworthy that the last two owners of the portrait ended their lives on the scaffold, like the king depicted in it.
