Snapdragon X2 Plus Surfaces: Faster, Brighter, Pricier
Microsoft's cheapest Surface just got $350 more expensive. That's the first thing you'll notice about the new Snapdragon X2 Plus Surface Pro 12-inch and Surface Laptop 13-inch. The second thing is that they're a lot better.
Microsoft showed both machines on September 23. They ship in the US on October 13, and pre-orders are open now. You get a faster chip, brighter screens and more memory. You also lose the sub-$1,000 price that made these the easy pick last year.
So who should care? If you want a light Windows laptop that lasts all day, this is one of the most important launches of the year. If you're on a tight budget, it's a warning sign.
What happened
Microsoft refreshed its two small Surface models. Both now use Qualcomm's six-core Snapdragon X2 Plus chip. Its NPU is rated at 80 TOPS. An NPU is a small AI engine inside the chip, and TOPS counts how many trillion math steps it can do each second.
Here are the new starting prices, as reported by Tom's Hardware:
- Surface Pro 12-inch: $1,149, up from $799
- Surface Laptop 13-inch: $1,199, up from $899
- New Surface Mouse with haptic feedback: $79.99
Why the big jump? The 8GB models are gone. Both now start with 16GB of RAM, and you can get 24GB. Storage is 256GB or 512GB. So the real rise for a like-for-like 16GB model is smaller than the headline gap.
What's new inside the Snapdragon X2 Plus Surface
First, a quick primer. These Surfaces run Windows on Arm. That means they use the same kind of chip design as your phone, not the Intel or AMD chips most PCs use. The upside is long battery life and little heat.
Microsoft's own Surface launch post lists big gains over last year's Snapdragon X Plus models. Graphics are over 60% faster. AI tasks on the NPU run up to 95% faster. Office apps are 17% quicker, and battery use is up to 18% more efficient.
These are Microsoft's numbers, so wait for real-world tests. Still, the chip story is getting more crowded. Qualcomm, AMD, Intel and Apple are all racing to own the AI PC. We covered that fight in our piece on AMD's $1 trillion milestone and the AI hardware race.
The screens got a fix too. Both now hit 500 nits, up from 400. That's about 25% brighter, which helps if you work near a window or outdoors. The Pro keeps its 90Hz, 2196 x 1464 panel. The Laptop stays at 60Hz and 1920 x 1280.
Battery life looks strong. Windows Central lists the Laptop 13 at up to 18 hours of web use. The Pro 12 gets up to 13 hours. There's also a 5G option for business buyers of the Pro, plus a new black colour.

The Pro is the one to buy if you want a tablet you can also type on. The Laptop is the better deal if you just want a laptop. It has more ports, a bigger battery and no keyboard to buy on the side.
The bigger question is rivals. At $1,199, the Laptop 13 now sits in the same price zone as many premium thin laptops. It no longer wins on price alone. It has to win on battery, build and how well your apps run.
What the Snapdragon X2 Plus Surface means for you
If you're in India, there's no news yet. Microsoft hasn't shared an Indian price or date. Don't trust quick rupee maths either. Import duty and GST usually push Indian prices well above a straight dollar swap.
Here's the simple advice:
- Need a laptop now under ?1 lakh? Look at last year's Surface models as they get discounts.
- Want on-device AI and long battery life? The new models are worth the wait.
- Use old Windows apps or games a lot? Check they run well on Arm first.
Arm chips run apps built for them very well. Some older apps still run through a translation layer, and that can be slower. It's much better than it was, but it's worth checking.

The bottom line
These are the best small Surfaces Microsoft has made. The brighter screens and 16GB base fix the two biggest complaints. But the entry price was their best feature, and it's gone. If a deal brings the Laptop 13 near $999, it's an easy yes. At $1,199, you've got real choices.
