Weekend Thriller Watchlist (Oct 9–11): Animals, Below, Reporting Live and 3 More New on OTT

Some weekends call for comfort viewing. This is not one of them. Between October 8 and 9, the streamers dropped an unusually strong wave of thrillers: a kidnapping drama directed by and starring Ben Affleck, a sea-monster series off the coast of Newfoundland, a Mexican political blackmail story, and three sharp Indian titles about reporters, cops and stalkers. If you like your Friday night with a racing pulse, here is your watchlist.

We have already covered the big-screen releases worth booking this October, so this list is strictly about what you can stream from your sofa. Every title below is new on OTT this week, with platform, date and language so you can plan your weekend in two minutes.

Hollywood and international thrillers

Three very different flavours of tension here: a ransom-clock crime drama, a creature feature with real family weight, and a slow-burn conspiracy built on a leaked video.

1. Animals (Netflix)

Animals on Netflix: Ben Affleck, Kerry Washington and Gillian Anderson in the official trailer still
Animals on Netflix: Ben Affleck, Kerry Washington and Gillian Anderson in the official trailer still
  • Where to watch: Netflix (also in select theatres)
  • Release date: October 9, 2026
  • Language: English
  • Genre: Crime thriller, rated R, 1 hr 45 min
  • Cast: Ben Affleck, Kerry Washington, Gillian Anderson, Steven Yeun, Adriana Paz, Ray Fisher

Affleck directs, co-writes and stars as a Los Angeles mayoral candidate whose son is kidnapped. He and his wife, played by Kerry Washington, are pulled into a web of deception as they scramble to raise the ransom. Affleck has a proven feel for tight, morally messy crime stories, and the supporting cast is stacked: Gillian Anderson and Steven Yeun in the same film is reason enough to press play. Netflix has more on the film on its official Animals page on Tudum.

Why watch: A grown-up, R-rated thriller with a ticking clock, the kind of mid-budget adult drama that rarely gets made any more.

2. Below (Netflix)

Below on Netflix: Josh Hartnett in the official trailer still, filmed on the Newfoundland coast
Below on Netflix: Josh Hartnett in the official trailer still, filmed on the Newfoundland coast
  • Where to watch: Netflix
  • Release date: October 8, 2026
  • Language: English
  • Genre: Supernatural horror-thriller, limited series, 6 episodes, TV-MA
  • Cast: Josh Hartnett, Mackenzie Davis, Charlie Heaton, Willow Kean, Ruby Stokes, Rohan Campbell

Created by Jesse McKeown and filmed in Newfoundland, Below casts Josh Hartnett as Calvin Penney, a fisherman still haunted by his father's unexplained death. When an unidentified sea creature starts attacking his small town, he teams up with a visiting marine researcher (Mackenzie Davis) to face it and dig up the island's buried secrets. You can read the cast and episode details on Netflix's official Below page.

Why watch: Six episodes is a perfect one-weekend binge, and the remote fishing-town setting gives the scares real atmosphere.

3. Inside the Circle (Netflix)

  • Where to watch: Netflix
  • Release date: October 7, 2026
  • Language: Spanish (Mexico); original title El círculo
  • Genre: Political thriller series
  • Cast: Michel Brown, Zuria Vega, Osvaldo Benavides, Raúl Briones

Four lifelong friends find themselves in danger after a video is shared that hints at a link between the case of a famous actress and one of Mexico's most powerful political figures. Blackmail follows, and loyalties start to crack. The series is adapted from Jorge Zepeda Patterson's novel Los corruptores and produced by Lemon Studios.

Why watch: If you enjoy paranoid, who-can-you-trust stories with a political edge, this is the hidden gem of the week.

Indian thrillers new on OTT

Indian streaming has a strong week too, with one Hindi film and two Malayalam titles that also come with dubs in other South Indian languages.

4. Reporting Live (Netflix)

Reporting Live: Parineeti Chopra and Deven Bhojani in the Netflix trailer frame
Reporting Live: Parineeti Chopra and Deven Bhojani in the Netflix trailer frame
  • Where to watch: Netflix
  • Release date: October 9, 2026
  • Language: Hindi
  • Genre: Investigative crime thriller (film)
  • Cast: Parineeti Chopra, Deven Bhojani, Amol Palekar, Adil Hussain, Shekhar Suman

Directed by Dhruv Tripathi, who co-wrote it with Mihir Jadhav, Reporting Live stars Parineeti Chopra as an ambitious young reporter who, with a veteran cameraman played by Deven Bhojani, sets out to expose an illegal sand-mining operation. Amol Palekar on screen again is a treat in itself.

Why watch: A grounded, issue-driven thriller about the cost of chasing a story, and a meaty lead role for Parineeti.

5. Pradhama Drishtya Kuttakkar (Netflix)

  • Where to watch: Netflix
  • Release date: October 9, 2026 (theatrical release was September 11, 2026)
  • Language: Malayalam, with Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi dubs
  • Genre: Psychological crime thriller
  • Cast: Parvathy Thiruvothu, Mathew Thomas, Vijayaraghavan, Unnimaya Prasad, Sidharth Bharathan

Directed by Shahad Nilambur, this Onam-season hit gives Parvathy her first police role in Malayalam cinema. She plays Aleena Abraham, a newly appointed civil police officer and mother whose station is pulled into a murder case. Soon, she and her colleagues become suspects. The film earned over ?40 crore worldwide in theatres, so this is a chance to see what the fuss was about.

Why watch: A cop drama where the police station itself is the crime scene, anchored by one of Malayalam cinema's finest actors.

6. Eyes (SonyLIV)

  • Where to watch: SonyLIV
  • Release date: October 9, 2026
  • Language: Malayalam, also in Tamil, Telugu and Kannada
  • Genre: Psychological thriller series
  • Cast: Kani Kusruti, Shruti Ramachandran, Nikhila Vimal, Saniya Iyappan, Dev Mohan

Manu Ashokan, the director of Uyare, returns with a series starring Kani Kusruti as police officer Tina Sebastian, who investigates stalking cases involving women. The story leans into the psychology of obsession and control, with mental health professionals working alongside the police to spot warning signs before things escalate.

Why watch: A thriller with something to say, led by Kani Kusruti, whose quiet intensity suits this kind of material perfectly.

Quick weekend planner

  • One-night movie: Animals (English) or Reporting Live (Hindi)
  • Full-weekend binge: Below, six episodes
  • Regional pick: Pradhama Drishtya Kuttakkar, available in five languages
  • Something different: Inside the Circle or Eyes

Need more ideas? Last week's what to watch guide for September 28 to October 4 still has plenty worth catching up on. Marvel fans should also note how VisionQuest is taking over Marvel's October calendar, why its two-episode premiere night matters, and how the MCU is using streaming as the warm-up act for its next theatrical push.

Our pick

If you only have time for one, start with Animals on Netflix. It is the most complete package of the week: a strong cast, a lean 105-minute runtime and a premise that grabs you in the first act. For a regional choice, Pradhama Drishtya Kuttakkar comes a close second, a proven theatrical hit with dubs that make it easy for anyone to try. And if you want something to lose a whole Saturday to, Below is your binge.

Which one are you starting with? Let us know in the comments, and check back next week for more new arrivals on OTT.
