Apple is splitting the iPhone in two — and the foldable is the reason

Apple did not run out of a cheap iPhone. It ran out of stage time.

iPhone Duo is a book that opens to 7.6 inches and closes to a passport. That product does not share a keynote with a $599 slab without making one of them look like a leftover. So September is now Duo and Pro. Spring is the volume phone. Two calendars. One brand.

Closed, Duo is thick on purpose: two panels, a hinge, a cover display. Open, it is Apple’s thinnest iPhone. That dual body is the whole argument. You cannot sell “one iPhone for everyone” the night you show a hinge that costs more than last year’s Pro.

Landscape mode is the software excuse for the hardware. Split View, two apps, a tablet that still fits in a jacket. Once that demo is on the keynote, the old September ritual — here is the regular iPhone, here is the Pro — is dead. The regular slot moved to a press release in February or March.

Design-wise Apple is not hiding the fold. The crease is there. The book motion is the product. Compare that with iPhone 18 Pro on the same site and you see the split in one frame: slab versus book. Two phones, two prices, two seasons.

What this means if you buy this month: you are shopping the expensive half of the year. Duo starts at $1,999. 18 Pro starts at $1,199. The floor iPhone is last spring’s 17e, or whatever e-model Apple posts when the foldable is already in stores.

The foldable did not replace the cheap iPhone. It evicted it from September.
