Apple didn't cancel the cheap iPhone. It split the calendar and raised the floor

John Ternus’s first September keynote did not just add a foldable. It quietly broke the iPhone year in two. The phones that ship this month are the expensive ones. The volume model is not in the room.

That is the official story from Surprise and Shine on September 9, and it is more consequential than another camera bump. Apple did not cancel the cheap iPhone. It moved it off the September stage, kept the $599 floor on the e-line, and used September for Pro, foldable, and Watch money.

iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199 and ships September 18. There is no base iPhone 18 this fall. Buyers who used to wait for the September “standard” phone are being pointed at last year’s 17, at 17e from March, or at a spring 18e that has not been announced on stage.

That is the split. September is the showroom. Spring is the volume SKU.

The e-phone is how Apple raised the floor without saying the word “cancelled.” iPhone SE used to start at $429. 16e jumped to $599. 17e stayed at $599 and doubled base storage to 256GB. MagSafe and Qi2 finally landed on the cheap chassis. A19 and the C1X modem closed part of the gap with last year’s flagship. Soft Pink joined Black and White.

What you still do not get at $599: Dynamic Island, a second camera, ProMotion, the foldable hinge. Apple is fine with that. The $200 gap to a regular 17 is the point. The $600 gap to 18 Pro is the new year.

Why split the calendar? A foldable and a Pro stack cannot share a two-hour keynote with a $599 slab without making the slab look like an afterthought. Spring press releases already worked for 16e and 17e. Ternus kept that lane and used September for the products that need a stage.

For India and other price-sensitive markets this matters more than the hinge. The phone most people actually buy is still the e-model or a discounted leftover 16/17. Those units will not be in Apple Stores as a September hero. They will show up in a newsroom post, on the Shop page, and in carrier bundles when the calendar flips to February or March.

If you need a new iPhone this month and you do not want Pro money, you are not locked out. You are just off-cycle. 17e is the current cheap floor. 16e is discontinued. A spring 18e, if it follows the same script, should hold $599 and pick up another small list of leftovers from this September’s Pro stack.

Apple did not kill the affordable iPhone. It stopped pretending that phone belongs on the same night as a foldable.
