Apple’s foldable crease plan is a $19 peel, not a lifetime hinge

Apple already named the foldable. It is iPhone Duo, not iPhone Ultra, and the September 9 event was the official debut under CEO Ternus. What is still ahead is the sale: pre-orders open Friday, October 16 at 5 a.m. Pacific, and the first stores and deliveries land Friday, October 23. The more interesting hardware note this week is not another spec leak. It is Apple admitting that the folding screen has a cover layer you can peel off and replace.

What Apple actually shipped in the announcement

Opened, Duo is the thinnest iPhone yet, with a 7.6-inch inner Super Retina XDR panel that Apple says is about 50 percent larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max screen. Closed, a 5.4-inch outer display covers roughly 90 percent of the screen area of an iPhone 18 Pro. Both panels share an aspect ratio so apps do not have to letterbox when the phone unfolds. The frame is polished grade 5 titanium in Star White and Night Sky. Touch ID sits on the power button. Face ID is not the unlock path here.

Pricing is official, not a rumor band. In the U.S. the phone starts at $1,999 for 256GB, then $2,199 for 512GB, $2,599 for 1TB, and $3,199 for 2TB. Apple also lists a 24-month installment near $83.29 and an Apple Upgrade lease from about $57.99 a month. A case is $79. A folio with kickstand is $129. A second batch of 28 countries and regions gets the phone on October 30. Duo ships with iOS 27.1, which is why that point release has to land before the hardware does.

The crease is designed to be serviced

On October 1, hardware engineering vice president Kate Bergeron told a TikTok interviewer that the matte coating reduces how visible the crease is, and that a cover layer sits on top of the folding display. She said Apple engineered that layer to wear slowly, and that it is replaceable: peel it off, put a new one on, and the surface can look closer to day one. Quinn Nelson later pointed at AppleCare estimated service costs, where a cover-layer replacement is listed at $19 with AppleCare. The out-of-warranty price is still unpublished.

That is a different durability pitch from the usual foldable brochure. Most makers talk about hinge cycles and a crease you learn to ignore. Apple is treating the outer film as a consumable, closer to a screen protector than to the OLED itself. If the film is what hides the fold, owners who keep the phone for four or five years will be booking a cheap service visit instead of living with a deepening line. If the film is only cosmetic and the panel underneath still creases, $19 will not fix the thing people photograph in reviews.

Why the October gap matters

Ming-Chi Kuo has argued that early foldable production will be tight, with suppliers shipping on the order of 7 to 8 million units through 2026, against 20 to 22 million combined iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max units. He has also floated a later pre-order window than the September unveil, which is exactly the calendar Apple published. Limited yield is the straightforward reading of a six-week pause between the stage and the store. It also explains why Apple can talk about a replaceable layer now: service parts have to exist before the first units land.

Meanwhile the conventional flagships are already in buyers’ hands. iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199 and the Pro Max at $1,299, both on sale since September 18, with A20 Pro, a smaller Dynamic Island, a variable-aperture main camera, and video-playback ratings of about 36 and 45 hours. Those phones are the control group. Duo has to justify a $700 step up from the Pro, and it has to do it with a hinge and a film, not with a faster chip.

What to watch before October 16

Three checks matter more than another color render. First, whether Apple publishes the out-of-warranty cover-layer price and whether stores can do the peel the same day. Second, whether iOS 27.1 arrives cleanly before pre-orders, since Duo is tied to that build. Third, whether the 5 a.m. Pacific window slips on delivery dates the way the iPhone X did in 2017. A long ship estimate on day one would confirm Kuo’s volume warning. A same-week delivery would mean the delay was staging, not supply.

The product is official. The open question is whether a replaceable film and a titanium hinge are enough to make a $1,999 foldable feel like an iPhone you keep, or like a first-generation experiment with a service menu attached.
